Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Work in Canada After Graduation?

International students who graduate from eligible Canadian institutions may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — a valuable opportunity to gain Canadian work experience after finishing your studies.

What Is the PGWP?

The PGWP allows graduates to work in Canada after completing a program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). It’s an open work permit, meaning you can work for any employer in Canada.

How Long Is It Valid?

The length of the permit depends on your program:

  • For most programs, the PGWP is valid for up to the same length as your study program, up to a maximum of 3 years
  • If you completed a master’s degree, you can still get a 3-year PGWP, even if your program was less than 2 years, as long as it was at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec programs).
  • Diplomas and certificates are not eligible for this exception.

Note: Your passport must be valid for the full PGWP period. If your passport expires sooner, your PGWP will be shortened — but you can apply later to extend it once you renew your passport.

Things to Note When Applying?

To qualify for the PGWP, you must:

  • Complete a program of at least 8 months (or 900 hours in Quebec) at a PGWP-eligible DLI
  • Maintain full-time student status during your studies (except during your final semester)
  • Apply for the permit within 180 days of getting confirmation that you’ve completed your program
  • Have a valid study permit at some point during those 180 days

Language Requirements

You’ll need to show proof of English or French language skills:

  • Minimum CLB 7 (English) or NCLC 7 (French) in all four areas — reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Cost

  • PGWP application fee: CAD $255
  • If your student status has expired, you’ll also need to pay a restoration fee of CAD $389.75

The PGWP is an excellent path for international graduates who want to stay in Canada, gain work experience, and potentially transition to permanent residency. Be sure to apply within the deadline and have all documents, including a valid passport and proof of graduation, ready.?
