USA Post-Study Work Options for International Graduates: OPT and STEM OPT?
International students graduating from U.S. universities can stay and work in the U.S. after completing their degree through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. This gives graduates a chance to gain real-world experience related to their field of study, even after their F-1 student visa has expired.
Optional Practical Training (OPT): What Is It?
OPT is a temporary work authorization for F-1 visa holders that allows international students to:
- Work off-campus in jobs related to their major
- Stay in the U.S. for up to 12 months after graduation
- Work part-time (minimum 20 hours/week) or full-time
You do not need a job offer to apply for OPT, but you must:
- Have completed at least one academic year
- Apply before completing your degree
- Maintain lawful F-1 status
When and How to Apply
- You can start the OPT application process up to 90 days before graduation.
- Apply through your Designated School Official (DSO) and submit Form I-765 to USCIS.
- It can take up to 90 days to receive your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), which you must have before beginning work.
- All OPT employment must be completed within 14 months after your degree is completed.
STEM OPT Extension
If you graduate with a STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics), you may qualify for a 24-month extension, giving you a total of 36 months of work eligibility in the U.S.
Important Travel Notes
If you're on OPT and planning to travel internationally:
- Do not travel after graduation unless you've received your EAD card and have a job offer.
- To re-enter the U.S., you must carry:
- A valid passport
- Your EAD card
- F-1 visa
- All I-20 forms signed for travel (within 6 months)
- A job offer letter with employment details
How Much It Costs
- Filing the I?765 (online): US $470
- Filing the I?765 (paper version): US $520
- Depending on your situation, you might also pay a biometric services fee of US $85 in addition.
The OPT and STEM OPT programs are excellent options for international students who want to start their careers in the U.S. after graduation. Be sure to apply early, consult your DSO, and keep your documents to make the most of this opportunity.?
